One headlight brighter than the other?

1. Rohan Says: Driving along at night I've noticed a few cars with one lamp much brighter than a dull other one. What causes this and is it illegal?
2. Mick Says: Yes, it's illegal and it's annoying. It's usually a head light that's gone leaving only the integral sidelight working. The main cause of this is the manufacturers' insistence on making bulb replacement more and more difficult with every new model they bring out. A new Peugeot 207, for instance, has to have a wheel removed and the plastic inner arch removed before you can get to the back of the light unit. My car, you have to open the front flappy bit, unplug the wire, remove/replace bulb and be on your way within about 4 minutes. With regard to the other car, you're looking at about an hour at a garage. So most people cannot be bothered to change them until they get pulled for it.

Also, bulbs are getting worse (shorter life span) regardless of what the manufacturers tell you.

Edit:typo
3. Tim S Says: This is often caused by a bad earth connection to the headlight unit. You also see it in rearr lights and there it may appear that the indicator flashes slowly and the tail light goes on and off too when signalling.
4. hornchurchmale Says: could be they have replaced a sealed unit on one side with a newer unit ( often much brighter when new) or out of alignment lamps or even if a bulb type ? wrong bulb wattage one side? it wil be checked at a MOT and if noticeably different will fail.
5. Genie Says: Its probably not that one is brighter than the other (although that would be illegal) they are just not aligned properly
6. xdous2008 Says: they have fixed the new bulb themself and its not properly centered
