Is it bad for my aftermarket air filter to absorb hot air from the engine?

1. shaka Says: Its a big air filter aftermarket but iam thinking of maybe putting a shiled so it could keep it from not sucking in hot air from the engine and sperating it any suggestion?
2. tlworkroom Says: You used the term "absorb", as if it's getting heated from sitting atop the engine, rather than sucking in hot air. If that is correct, then that's bad. The air filter should be sitting off the top of the engine because the enigne gets really hot, hot enough to melt stuff.

but if you're referring to sucking in hot air from the enigne, that's correct. It's not bad, but it's better to have a little cooler air for engine to use. You'd think that running a car when it's 100 F outside might be the same, but it's not. The heat from an engine can get up a few hundreds of degrees.

Some really fancy amd serious aftermarket filters actually have setups to provide "cold air" intake, so as not to use the warmer air right off the engine. And that's why many modern cars have a tube from the air filter to up towards the front grill or headlight, so it'll get cooler air coming in from the front.

But it's no big deal if the car does use the warmer air. Cars from 30's thru 70's were made that way.

FFS! I'd be learning to write first before worrying about your air filter. I presume that the following is your question.

I have a large after market air filter fitted to my car and I am thinking of putting a shield on it in order to stop it from sucking in hot air from the engine bay. Also, possibly moving it away from the engine compartment all together. Any suggestions?

Anything you can do to keep the intake temperature down will increase the air density and this will be beneficial in improving performance and reducing emissions. If you live in a very cold climate, you need some sort of intake heating device for use during the engine warm up. Be careful not to restrict the air filter intake
4. alberding hohnstein Says: It's amazing! Best of luck! http://www.amazon.com/Surround-Air-XJ-3800-Intelli-Pro-Purifier/dp/B000HVTC5G%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAISJDSS4FGFKOAYFQ%26tag%3Dyan006-20%26linkCode%3Dsp1%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB000HVTC5G
5. don r Says: The engine management computer will take care of that. If the filter doesn't fit the housing, it doesn't belong in that car. The air intake probably isn't remote enough to avoid some underhood heat anyway.
6. suzonka Says: those after market round filters have some sort of shield as a kit or the placement is way up toward the front of the radiator, maybe you have the wrong kit for your vehicle
