What would cause the engine to bog down and intermittent white smoke from a tail pipe?

With an older car I would suspect failed gasket or rings (imperfect seal allowing other motor fluids into the combustion feed), with a newer car I would suspect some sort of failed module that controls the air-fuel mix.

But I am not a mechanic and do not know this stuff for certain.
