Best used car for a budget of strictly £2000 and advice when going to the used car dealership?

1. Frisky666 Says: Hi, I'm looking to go to a dealership to buy a used car. It has to be 5 door and be between a 1.4 - 1.6 engine, hopefully around the 60k mileage. I was thinking along the lines of a Skoda or Astra or a Focus something reasonable to run and pretty reliable. I'm 20 year old lad so it can't be anything with a turbo or big engine as the insurance companies will see me coming and take me for every last penny I have.

Any ideas and advice for when I go to the dealer? Should I haggle, what should I expect. I'm not going to buy private because of all the potential hassle, I'm not a car expert and I don't know anyone who could check the car for me.

Thank you!
2. Timbo is here Says: Very important - before you commit to buy check the insurance price as even a 1.4 could be £5000 and will certainly not be less than £2500 a year.
If you and no one else can check the car for you then there is little you can do but to rely on any guarantee that the dealer will give. You must insist on a full 12 month MOT (road tax is usually extra to the price on the screen) Insist on seeing the cars V5C (log book) and soo how many users it has had. If less than 4 it should be OK on that but if 6 or over be suspicious.
A 53 plate 2004 Focus from an independent dealer will start at £2300 for a basic CL 1.4 3 door with 60000 on the clock.
A similar 1.4 Astra 16V Envoy 5 dr would be around £1950
A similar Skoda Fabia 1.2 Classic independent dealer would be £1690.

The Focus may well be out of your price range and the Astra too may be well out of your insurance price range where the basic 1.2 fabia could be a lot better on insurance.
3. Colin Says: check out the insurance scales for range of models avoid fiat and nissan difficulty with parts they forget what they make. you can have even more hassle from a dealer who marks up the value. look for the lowest mileage at 60K you will need a new timing belt to be fitted. search hard for damage and get explanations don't be too quick to pay make sure all dash dials are working smmooth tick over no knocks light exhaust fumes check history tyres, compressed seats the radio least of all
