92 octane and 87 octane ? Does higher octane make cars run faster?

1. mike Says: Only if they have high performance engines. Higher octane only allows for more stable combustion under higher pressures (if it is a high compression engine or supercharged or turbocharged). In a regular engine it makes no difference except to your wallet.
2. calnickel Says: No higher octane fuel has a hotter burn temperature and is for high performance engines and or trucks that tow a lot of weight to help prevent pinging or pre ignition.

It is also good to run a few tanks through your car every once in a while because it will actually act like a mild fuel system cleaner.

Also it may give the engine a couple more hp (1-2) but it is not noticeable, and not worth the extra money all the time.
3. Tuono Cane Says: Higher octane does not burn hotter, with more power or cleaner. It does contain more anti knock compounds that allow its use in high compression engines. You are actually best off using the octane recommend by the manufacturer for your engine and not the octane suggested by some idiot on the internet. Just sayin'.
4. molitor Says: no
the higher the octane the slower the fuel burns. were are talking about mls. if you ever heard the motor sounds like it has ball bearings in it, that is pre ignition or pingingin the cylinder. that is caused by the fuel igniting to soon. in another words the higher the octane the better fuel eco you will get and not much on the preformance side.
5. Dan Says: Depends on the car. In a regular car: NO. In a car with an adaptive PCM (one that changes the fuel mapping based on the octane being used) it absolutely can and will because they generally use less aggressive fuel mapping for lower octane (at least in GMs case).
6. Hank Scorpio Says: Not unless the manual calls for 92 Octane fuel; otherwise, you are wasting your money.
7. ³ ŤŘÍČǨƳ ƊÍCKƳ³----------------- éáŧɱ±áƹº«é Says: No, not at all..
hi oct. is for high compression cars only, it inhibits combustion.
8. Rogue Says: No. Your engine might run better if it is a high performance motor.
9. Kirk Says: not really
10. David Lee Says: Uhhh....no.
11. Mr. KnowItAll Says: i bet you drive a pos civic
