1. Mike B Says: do you think it will be a good reliable car?
2. Campus Shoe Says: Yes they are. Thats one of the reasons so many police and taxi comps use them. Reliable, comfotable,EZ to fix, parts are EZ to get,and good gas mileage for a V8 full size RWD car.
3. hey-what-what Says: Be careful about who owned it before. I bought a 1998 model from a guy who bought it from the North Carolina Highway Patrol. While the NCHP takes really good care of their cars, the second owner wasn't so great with it. After a few months it needed a new pittman arm, idler arm, master cylinder, and hoses that should have been replaced 5,000 miles before. After that I had zero trouble for 2 1/2 years until the thermostat leaked and fried a coil pack, causing a cylinder misfire, costing $270 to fix. The steering has been constantly loose despite two alignments. The headliner is sagging in places, but I've got it pinned up with thumbtacks. Overall, for a 13-year-old car with 135K miles, I'd say mine is pretty reliable. Crown Victorias are known to go 300,000 miles with diligent maintenance.

You definitely get a value out of a P71. It's inexpensive to buy and relatively easy and inexpensive to work on due to wide availability of parts and a big engine compartment to work in. Fuel economy is mediocre at about 17mpg in the city. It is a fairly safe car, being big and heavy, and the front seat offers lots of leg room, but the back seat is cramped. The seats aren't as supportive as other cars, and can get uncomfortable on long trips. And yes, people will think you're a cop and be more courteous on the road, but it gets old really fast when everyone drives too slow.

For all its advantages and dependability, I'd still rather have something else. I've gotten tired of sedans and wish I had an SUV. Crown Vics (and other large sedans) are popular with criminals for various reasons, so you'll get extra attention from cops, especially if you're a young minority.

Unless you're a car enthusiast and like tinkering, modifying, and doing repairs yourself, I'd advise you to go with something else, but if you really love big sedans, at least get something with more luxury and features than an old cop car. You'll get sick of the vinyl or rough cloth seats pretty soon.
4. justmeok! Says: Yes Crown Vics are great cars. They are very reliable, cheap and easy to repair, and will drive forever. They have been know to get well over 500,000 miles on them. I have a 98 CV and love it, it's still in great shape and running strong.
5. R.J. Says: very reliable...Bit of a gas hog though...Buy one from a retired guy with respectable mileage...Remember when many cop cars were crown vics?...Good roomy car
