Any ideas what could be wrong with my car?

1. Jared Jedliska Says: Hello. I have a 2000 Mazda 626. Recently when I would start my car, it has been blowing smoke out of the muffler for a few seconds after it starts. It only does this the first time I start my car for the day. Today the check engine light came on. I haven't had a chance to go get the code read yet, as it just came on today on my way to work. It also sometimes has a slight hesitation when I start off from being stopped. Not much of one, only like a quarter second or so. I was wondering if anyone knows what's up. Do these problems sound like they are connected somehow? Or do they all seem to be separate issues. Just wondering what I'm in for when I take it to the shop. Thanks
2. P W Says: AGE is whats wrong with your car. From what you say it sounds like you have a valve stem seal leaking allowing a small amount of oil to get into cylinder when you first crank the car causing that smoke. Its not anything to be very concerned about at this point though it can cause minor problems with emission systems. Most likely the hesitation and check engine light is caused by malfunctioning EGR or O2. This is again a symptom of old age compounded by that valve stem leak. A new EGR should last 2-3 years even with that leaking valve stem. by then you prolly won't have car anymore. so I'd just replace EGR/O2 whichever is failed and continue on. Its not worth the trouble to replace the valve stem that is a very slow failing part and will last for years and years more with morning smoke gradually getting worse as time goes by.
3. aclstrat Says: Sounds like you could have an oil leak, which gets ignited upon ignition, hence the puff of smoke on startup. It burns up all of the leaked out oil, but your engine then gets dangerously low on oil causing the check engine light to come on. I would have them check the undercarrage as well for oil spots, leaks, cracks. Also, look at your parking space after being parked all night, notice any fresh oil spot leaks? Good luck.
4. Brian Griffin Says: Just take it to a legitimate shop and have them diagnose and repair [if worth it, might be time to junk it]
Sounds like you do not take care of your car.
5. Rob Says: the blue smoke indicates burning oil
have you checked the oil level this can happen if u put too much oil in
it could also be a worn oil ring on piston
valve guides
could possible be a worn seal on turbo (if fitted)
or pcv valve
6. Fred F Says: First thing that come to mind- possible bad oxygen sensor.
