What is wrong with my car?

1. dmxboomer302 Says: I have a car that has sat for 1 year through a winter and will not start. I have added 2 gallons of gas to an almost empty tank and changed the battery.

The car turns over but will not start. not even a sputter. this makes me assume its one of two things...no spark or no gas. i haven't check the ignition system but im almost positive that the fuel pump is not working.

do you think this is just a fuse or does the fuel pump go bad after sitting this long?

besides changing the fuel pump if that is necessary, what else should i fix/replace before trying to start it again?

2. Paul Says: When you turn the Key to the ON position can you hear the Pump Running? Replace the Fuel Filter and Check at the line to the filter if you have Fuel. [You may need more then 2 gallons to Cover the Pump] Ya pull 1 plug wire and make sure you have spark. {When you get it running make sure you change the Oil & Filter after sitting a Year}
3. Ian McHaley Says: Get in your car and try turn the key so that just the electrical power comes on. When you do this you should hear a humming noise coming from your gas tank area. If you do hear that humming noise, that is your fuel pump, if you don't than chances are your fuel pump is bad. You can also disconnect the lines that go to your carburetor or fuel injectors to see if any gas comes out when you try to turn it over. If no then again it is your fuel pump. Check to see the humming noise of the pump, check to see if you have spark, check to see if gas is getting to the injectors. From your explanation it won't be much more than a bad fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, or corroded spark plugs. Try those things and give us an update.
4. RAJ Says: If it doesnt even splutter, then its not the fuel pump...cos it would seem as if it is trying to start, but wouldn't, if it was a fuel pump problem. I would assume that the ignition coil has gone bad or the spark plugs. Did you try removing the spark plugs, cleaning them and cleaning the terminals of the spark plug wire and then tried to start?
5. bandit_60 Says: if the pump is,nt kicking on check the pump fuse and the relay. maybe the fuel filter is clogged up the reason it won,t start. go ahead and work on getting gas to the engine first. if it don,t start then check for fire at the plugs. it could be the coil or module went out.
6. wes Hunt Says: make sure your terminals arent corroded, see if your plugs are still good and sparking, maybe put some gas treatment in it just in case. but the best thing to do would be get a chevy lol.
7. Sarah Adams Says: replace the starter, could be the fuel pump, could be the battery wiring....
8. Ryan M Says: if you would like to know if your fuel pump is bad turn your key do not try to start it you should hear the pump turn on ... try cleaning your speark plugs and jump starting the car also
9. stevenbjammin Says: A car needs 1 spark 2 air 3 gas. If any are not in the correct mix then it won't start. Buy a can of starting fluid and spray in the big black plastic thing you take off the top of the motor (air intake) and if the fuel pump is bad it will start but. Will go dead unless someone keeps spraying fluid in. If that's nOt it then change the plugs. Fuel pumps do not go bad by sitting up but gas can. Gas should be good for a year. If you are not sure then add gas treatment to the tank or water remover ATP makes in a yellow bottle.
10. John C Says: id check for spark at the coil first before you go any farther , if you can crank over the motor the starters good if it ran when u parked it and now it doesn't fuses should be good . open the hood and locate your fuel rail , on the fuel rail will be a "now be cautious , there could be a high pressure in the system , press in the valve to test for fuel pressure . if you get pressure then your fuel pump is good . Get a can of ether (you only need a little bit ) remove the air inlet tubing to the throttle body give the motor a sniff of the ether and then turn the motor over. Now if its catches like it wants to start then your doing good , now give it two sniffs and test it again , have fun and be save when working around pressurized fuel systems
