Why are there no 2 stroke cars?

...but they were both smoky and underpowered. It is possible to build a clean, efficient 2-stroke engine (most American locomotives have them) but the additional complexity of building a loop-scavenged or uniflow engine negates the main advantages of 2-strokes for automotive use, simple and cheap construction.2. Says: It really comes down to fuel consumption and reliability as its been proven that a modern 2 stroke can burn as clean as a 4 stroke, and with manufactures under the gun to meet specific MPG standards, it just doesn't work, plus the fact that most modern 4 stroke engines will go 300k miles these days a 2 stroke will be lucky to see 100k, the candle that burns twice as bright burns out twice as fast so to say.3.
