Loss of power after spark plug change?

(2011-03-28 14:20:37)
1. jamal s Says: I changed my spark plugs yesterday and now the car has no power, it won't go over 25 mph, and you almost have to floor it just to get up to that speed. It sounds OK when it is in idle, but you can tell the rhythm of the engine changes once you put the car in gear. Except for having to tap the gas to keep the car from dying once put in gear, the car was driving fine before the spark plug change. The spark plugs were the only thing that I touched.

I've changed the gaps on the plugs 2 or 3 different times, I've put the old plugs back into the car, i've switched the wiring in case that was the problem, switched them back. Still no luck. Does anyone have an idea of what's wrong?
2. bandit_60 Says: you better check the wires. you might have pull 1 too hard and broke the core inside of 1. that,s a nice car and i can,t see how changing just the plugs can do all that unless you did get the firing order wrong on those 2 plugs. change the 2 plug wires around and see if it makes any difference.
3. bandit_60 Says: your dad could be right. if your pipe is smashed, cat is clogged or the muffler baffles are burnt up it can shut some of your power down too.
4. Bill Says: sounds like the car was running bad before you raised the hood.the reason i say that is because i have 3 boys 15'18'and 21 and the only time they check the oil is if im in the shop messing around.but all jokes too the side check the distribator cap.but i have got a set of bad plugs that may b it
5. Michael S Says: You switched the wiring in case that was the problem. Then you switched them back.

I think you need to get the proper firing order and put the wires where they belong, also, why would you change the gap of the plug, are you just guessing?

You probably need someone who knows what they are doing to look at your vehicle before you really mess it up.
6. Mr. KnowItAll Says: My thumb didn't hurt until I hit it with a hammer.
What's wrong?

Double check the spark plug wires.

Run it at idle and spray some window cleaner, or water on the exhaust where it comes out of the engine.
Which ever exhaust port doesn't boil when it's wet is not firing.
Swap those spark plug wires over.
7. Whoa D Says: Why did you change the spark plugs if the car was driving fine? I will assume that since it didn't have the problem until you fixed it, that you didn't put the spark plugs in right. Is it misfiring? Are they the right plugs? Its obviously something you did.
8. Steve Says: Make sure you are gapping the plugs to the manufactures specs! Then make sure the firing order is correct. You might by accident crossed the wires. Then if that doesn,t do it I would check the timing. You didn,t say what year it was or if it had a Cap and rotor!......Steve
9. krazy man Says: check for a vacuum line leak . you may have accidentally disconnected one. that leak will do it . It happens all the time even to the best of mechanics.
10. Stacey Says: you either have the wrong gap, wrong plug or the wires got crossed. sounds more like crossed wires to me.
