The voltage of my car fluctuates but only while the car is cold, any ideas wot this could be?

1. Pete Foster Says: My car's voltage fluctuates between 11 and 14.5 volts but only during the first 10/15mins of driving, basically until it warms up. I've had a new alternator fitted and cleaned up the visible earths from the battery terminal and gearbox but still having the same problem, any ideas? Its a peugeot 306 hdi 2.0 2000.
2. bobweb Says: Unless you've had the battery load tested good, I'd replace it with a new one if it's over 4 years old. Next you need to make sure the battery cables and connectors are absolutely clean, tight and good. Next buy a digital "multimeter" from Sears (for example, $25) and touch it's test leads across the battery terminals while the engine is warming up. Does the voltage reading vary as you say? If not, then suspect a dash wiring, bad dash voltmeter or other problem causing the faulty reading.

One possibility of measurement error when using a digital multimeter is when the voltage fluctuates so rapidly that the digital measurement circuitry can't keep up with it and the meter reads erratically. In that case, you need to use an analog voltmeter rather than a digital voltmeter.
3. mdk68gto, ase certified m tech Says: have you tested for ac voltage, that would be a sign of a poor connection some where. i think that is part of your problem.
4. Bob Says: its using more power till everything warms up,you get this when the battery is charging or getting old
