What is the Proper Way to Repaint a Car?
(2011-04-11 14:20:24) 1. Says: Bought a used honda sedan that has some bad paint on the trunk. See pictures here:http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5269/5605445260_d18994418f_m.jpg
I am thinking about repainting it since its only the trunk lid. What is the proper procedure to do so? If I had it done professionally instead, what would be a fair estimate?2. Says: Theres a lot of prepwork into painting vehicles. first you have to sand down the trunk lid completely . Then you have to chemically clean it. Then you have to use tach clothes to remove all contaminants from the surface. Then you have to use a spray gun to spray on a thin layer of primer and let it sit. once dry you need to sand it down with about a 600 grit sand paper.Tack cloth again. After that you need to spray a good coat of primer. Usually between 3-4 mils would be sufficient. Then do another sand job with about a 1200 grit sand paper. Then you have to tack cloth it again. Then paint it with the paint matching the paint code usually located under the hood of the vehicle. Then you have to wet sand it, then tack cloth again. Then another thin coat of paint. Usually ya follow this process about 4 coats on the paint. Then the newer cars use a clear coat. After all is said and done.. its cheaper to get it painted at a reparable body shop. They can match the paint color and can usualy do it faster bc they have booths that can control the climate to a degree where painting is perfect. hope this helps3. Says: Auto painting requires a bit of experience to get the paint smooth and shiny. You might make the paint run if you get too much on it. I sanded one of my cars in high school and had a pro paint it which saved me a lot of money as I did the prep work which is the hardest part. Use wet or dry sand paper #220 which is very fine. Wet sand it with water. Before you paint you need to wipe with a cleaner solution that can be bought at an auto supply store such as Napa. Also you need to wipe after that with a tack cloth. These 2 steps remove any impurities so the paint will stick well. The store where you get auto paint can teel you anything you need to know. Also you need 3 to 5 thin coats of paint, not 1 thick one.4. Says: from what i have seen, tape it off, sand it down, clean it , prime it and paint.5. Says: If you have never painted before, you would be better off having it done. The equipment to do it will be more than the repair. Expect about $250 Tag: What is the Proper Way to Repaint a Car?
