SERIOUS MECHANICS PLEASE HELP My dipstick is confusing me?? 3 quarts or 5? 10pts?
(2011-04-13 14:20:37) 1. Says: Car Make/Model: Honda Civic EX 2002 1.7L DOHC VTEC Automatic transmission Coupe.Ok listen to my story- I swapped a tranny with my bad one and my good tranny I drained all the old fluid out of there upset for the torque converter it was never touched, and yes torque converter did have fluid inside, anyways I bought 4 quarts of tranny fluid and filled 3 quarts in my new tranny but my dipstick showed up dry so i added a 4th quart to top it off on the dip stick but it still showed dry, so I raised the car on 2 jacks like 4 inches off the floor and started the engine and ran through all the gears so my fluid goes through all the gears, so i had to do that to make sure all the fluid goes through, so i ran the engine for about 11 minutes to get the car at its normal hot/warm temperature and turned off the engine and my dipstick shows that its almost to my 1st mark, Do I just keep topping it off to my 2nd mark on the dipstick? or 4 quarts is too much already for my car?
ok here is the dipstick below

I have a Car manual for 02 civic Coupe and it tells me that 2.8 or 2.9 quarts should be filled but thats for drain and fill process but since I've swapped my transmission and drain all the oil out upset for torque converter I believe I need to fill more than 3 quarts in it since my dipstick shows that its only almost to my first mark?
Someone please give me advice I am confused and stuck! I don't wan't to over fill my tranny people say it might break, and I don't want to under fill I might burn my gears or have slippage?
Any good advice might help thanks!2. Says: You need to check the ATF with the car running, the shift lever in neutral, and the car at operating temperature. I hope you bought the ATF from the dealer so you have the correct fluid or you will destroy the transmission. Anywhere in the xxx area is OK but the vehicle needs to be warmed up. If you have 3 to 4 quarts in already don't worry about running it in Park to warm it up. Dipsticks usually have a cold and hot fill mark. Always do the finale check hot.3. Says: Most automatics are to have the fluid level checked when hot, on level ground, with the engine running in neutral double check the procedure but I think you've made a boo boo and need to drain a considerable amount out. Not positive though.4. Says: one of the worst things to do is for u to run through gears without know were the iol level is i would say add maybe a half qrt of oil5. Says: the level should be at the top of the cross hatches when the trasn is warm and off.6. Says: First off, you have to have the car started in the first place and the engine at normal op temp to read the tranny dipstick properly. Did you do that? Run the car and get it to normal op temp and then check the level. Top off as needed. If you dont run the car then you won't get a right reading on the dipstick.
Usually you do have to add 1extra quart of fluid. If you get the car to normal op temp and your dipstick is still low, check for leaks.7. Says: You should always check your transmission fluid level with the car running at normal operating temperature, in neutral and on a flat, level surface.
If your dipstick has an area with several x's, like your image shows, the level needs to be somewhere in the x's. Below that is too low and above that is too high. Tag: SERIOUS MECHANICS PLEASE HELP My dipstick is confusing me?? 3 quarts or 5? 10pts?
