How to check if my car radiator system is working ?

2. J D Says: Water pumps in my experience work fine, or don't work at all. That is pretty much how they are designed. You can tell if the pump has failed by checking for leakage from the weep hole(s). Here is an article describing how to do that;

Also, check around where the pump connects to the engine to make sure coolant isn't leaking from there. If there is no coolant leaking, and the car is not overheating, then I think you are in the clear.

PS I don't like the idea of just checking to make sure the coolant is swirling by removing the cap and starting the engine. The vibrations of the engine running can agitate the coolant, even if the coolant isn't actually circulating.

glad you traced it to a faulty header ( rad) cap.
we should be able to see if water pump is operating by removing cap ( cold engine) and start engine.
get somebody ( you may be able to operate throttle under bonnet) to ref car a few times. a surge of water should flow across radiator and small degassing tube into header tank should ? show a thin stream of pumped water.
unless engine is still over heating? this isn't really necessary. if we rae ? then try changing thermostat next before changing water pump.

6. Scott W Says: start up cool with the radiator cap off. The coolant should be swirling. If not than the water pump is bad.
