Failed my road test :( don't understand why, please answer?

(2011-04-22 14:25:15)
1. Ms Cookiemonster Says: okay so i failed my road test mostly because of "Poor steering control" -15 points for strait driving, and 15 points for turning. i don't understand what i did wrong, and therefore i can't fix it! i had my hand @ 10 n 2 the whole time...both hands on the steering wheel...i turned using hand over hand (i live in N.Y btw) but what i did was..when i turned i let the wheel come back to me- i think it's called recovery? am i allowed to do that?

btw u know the little paper they give u of the stuff u did wrong? is that in the order that you did it? ex: if i had judgment n intersections 1st on the list and poor steering last is that the order that i did it in?

so sorry for all the questions!!! thanx in advance :)
2. Bostonian In MO Says: You should have asked the examiner for a detailed explanation of why you failed. It's impossible to guess as to what the reason might have been with not having been there to observe. I can only speculate.

It may be your hand position and how you manipulate the wheel. 10 and 2 and hand over hand was acceptable in the pre-airbag days but that's no longer the case in many states. The recommended position is 9 and 3 or even 8 and 4. Since the hand over hand method has you crossing your arms over the wheel between the airbag and yourself, it is no longer recommended. Most states recommend (and require on the road test) that you use the hand-to-hand method with both hands on the wheel at all times.

Recovery by releasing the wheel is pretty much a guaranteed fail these days as well. You should recover to the straight ahead by reversing the hand to hand movement, maintaining a grip on the wheel with one hand at all times but never fully releasing the wheel at any time.
3. Bostonian In MO Says: You're welcome. TFTP.
4. Dan Says: First, the advent of air bags has changed the hand positions to 9 &3 to get your hands out of the ballon zone.
If your fault list was hand written it is in order of failure, if it's printed it is not.
Check your state driving manual about recovery, but steering control can mean moving from 1 side of lane to other, wandering.
5. Brown Pride Rider Says: Maybe you were swerving, turned to wide or maybe too narrow. I'm not sure if u can do the recovery thing though. I think you have to have your hands on the wheel at all times. I'm not sure how it is in NY as I'm from CA
6. Francis Says: well i live in britain but i think safe driving is pretty much the same all over ,

when you let go of the steering to allow it as you say to recover you are no longer "in control of the vehicle " hands must be on the wheel at all times , as you steer in so you also steer out of your turn

even though you had hold of the wheel when driving the vehicle can still drift right and left due to steering control play so you must anticipate the movement your car is making and correct said drift

when you say judgement at junctions i can only assume you got in someones way or you had pulled up too soon /late either way i can't really say and i don't know what the driving examiner was seeing at the time -------------- hope all this helps , pass next time and send me a thank you . all the best
