How to sand down hard plastic with DA sander and what grit?

My only tool is a DA buffer/sander. Question being: What grit sand paper would do the job? I'm not looking for a nice finish, because the rings will be covered by Angel Eye LEDs. I need to know the safest and easiest way to do this with the tools I currently have to work with.2. Says: You want to remove ~0.666" of material, but I assume you do not want to spend all day to do it, right? In that case I would suggest you use 120 grit to take off the first 0.500", then to smooth things up a bit and remove the last bit of material switch to 180 - 220 grit. This will give a good surface finish if you need to bond the LED rings to it. But make sure you have enough room to position the DA without making a mess of everything. Most DA's use a 6" disc, then add about 1.5 to 2" for maneuvering the sander around to access the area you need to rework. This is quite a large surface area when considering the shapes commonly encountered in a dash. Would like to see you using a tool with a smaller working area but when you have to use what is at hand I understand. Just take your time, work slowly, and carefully, and you may end up with a sano finished job. Good luck!3.
