1. Alex Says: I'm 17 years old, been driving since I was 15 but all ive driven is automatics (shame on me and in the United States for making autos the most common type of transmissions) well anyways, I got my first car, and it is a stick shift. I've always wanted to learn to drive stick, but now my dad keeps telling me that sticks are more dangerous because you can roll into people or stall etc..

I want to learn to drive stick shift and do it well. I dont mean to become a drag race driver in 1 week, but at least be able to go in the highway and handle stop and go traffic. How can I do so? Ive only had one lesson and I found it quite difficult. I would always make the car jerk (vibrate) and sometimes stall, and even got the car on the curb while going in reverse lol

I am an excellent driver with automatics, but I want to be as good with manuals. One of my biggest problems is that I dont know whether I have to press the gas and keep it pressed before and while releasing the clutch or if I have to press the gas once I feel the car moving while im releasing the clutch??? I'm just to worried im gonna burn the clutch on my first car so soon..

Good help is appreciated. thanks!!
2. cory l Says: its actually very simple, slightly release the clutch and you'll feel it start to grab once you feel it grab you can press the gas just a little it'll take a LOT of practice at this to get it down just right, once your going its easy from there you can press the gas rev the engine up a little bit and THEN release the clutch thats fine as well. really you need to release that pedal as much as possible to stop from burning up your clutch, when you shift you need to keep your foot OFF of the clutch pedal don't rest your foot on it you can't be lazy move your foot to the dead pedal or on the floor EVERY time you shift when your stopped make sure your in neutral not first and sit there with the clutch pressed in your going to kill that throwout bearing or put a lot of pressure on your lines and blow one of your cylinders (slave or master) really first gear is 80% of what you need to learn from there its really simple, hills are a problem especially when someone gives you about 2 inches to roll, if its a steep hill what i've learned if you absolutely can't roll back is release that clutch to where it starts to engage, from there hit the gas and release it the rest of the way and you won't roll at all its tricky and not to be used unless necessary but you can do it.
As for your most biggest problem you can press the gas before releasing the clutch or when you feel the clutch engage but don't wait too long or you'll stall it and just remember to keep your foot off of that pedal as much as you can.

4. Won't get fooled again. Says: I prefer a stick to a slush-box any time. You have much more control over the car, especially in slippery conditions like snow.

If the car is jerking or stalling, you need more revs on the engine, or you need to let the clutch out more slowly (or a little of both). When the car starts to buck, push the clutch in, and let it out more slowly. There is no easy answer to technique, it will vary depending on what you want the car to do. When backing up you might only control the car by using the clutch without revving the engine. If you are starting on a hill, you will need to rev the engine as you let out the clutch. Don't worry too much about burning out the clutch in the normal use you describe. Holding a car on a hill with the clutch, resting your foot on the clutch, or abuse like burnouts are what destroys clutches. Practice will improve your technique.
5. Racist Not-Prejudice Says: the key is to understand the concept of a manual transmission.

when you start from a stop position, the best thing to do is to put it into first gear and slowly, let off the clutch. when in doubt. press the clutch immediately to prevent stalling. you need to practice with you left foot to feel the clutch when the gears hook into drive. you dont ever need to press the gas it if you are good enough with your left foot. once the gears engage your car will start moving

every other gear is cake. 1st gear is hardest for every newbie
