Premium fuel question?

(2011-05-15 14:25:06)
1. jdizzle Says: I have a 2001 Mitsubishi Diamante, and the manual says Premium fuel. I have been using regular, but if it matters would switch to premium. So what is the significance of premium fuel and is it needed?
2. BigeQ Says: Since the car recommends it you should be using it. Right now the computer of your car has more or less down tuned its self to run the lower octane gas, meaning your performance is suffering a bit, and you might be loosing some gas mileage.

If you go back to Premium you may notice a slight performance increase, and a few more miles to the gallon on a car that requires premium fuel.

Note it may take a couple tanks of fuel to notice the increase because the computer will need some time to readjust its self to the higher octane fuel.
3. BigeQ Says: Not a problem man, I had a car that ran on 91 at one time I went to regular 87 like you and it ran ok but after switching back after a few tanks I did notice a difference slight performance and mostly better mileage per gallon by a few MPG.
4. MorningLightMountain Says: Regular fuel in a car recommending premium will cause long-term damage.
Regardless of anything else, that is the best reason to use it.
I had a car that used premium fuel, I wouldn't have used premium fuel except that regular would have caused long-term damage.
5. Bluto B Says: Why don't you put diesel or bog water in the tank. No, really. If you are just going to make something up in your head instead of following the manual then go for it. You could change the oil for whipped cream and replace the air filter with a straw hat.
