Jumping a dead car battery w/ another car?

(2011-05-17 14:20:08)
1. Molecular Guy Says: They say that you should have both ignitions off, hook up the leads, then turn the car with the good battery on. By hooking up the leads while both cars are off, doesn't this risk draining the charge out of the good battery so that there's a possibility IT won't start?
2. Mike Schomer Says: It will put some amperage from the good battery but not enough to kill it unless you have everything turned like lights/stereo/blower on in the dead car then when connected to the good car it will pull more juice to in that case draining it but leaving both cars off is a good way to make the connection because like posted before it will cause a spike and fry the computer in most cases, just good habit and safer but the other car will start if it has a strong enough battery for jumping for example you couldnt/ could use a little 4cylinder geo metro to jump a semi you would have a such an amperage draw coming from the semi it would kill the metro but revving it may bring up some amperage to start a medium duty truck like a v8 or along those lines safely
3. Bharat Justa Says: connect + with + and, - with - and start the dead car......and remove the connectors. This will not take out extra juice from good battery as electrons don't move from + to + and, - to -. Once the dead car starts, the good/live battery can be disconnected.
4. Michael S Says: BTW, you do know that you should put that battery on a battery charger because the alternator is not built to charge a fully discharged battery. They are only built to recover the charge used to start the car, while 12V from the alternator goes to running the car.
5. Pete M Says: You're right, that is the best and safest way to proceed.

This will drain some power from the donor car, but don't worry about it. The plan is to start the donor car prior to starting the one with the dead battery.

6. mdk68gto, ase certified m tech Says: no, that is done so that you dont have a voltage spike to either car. that could kill a computer or two. since the dead battery is still off, with no keys at that point, it can not do much at all.
7. Matt Says: No, just leave the car running, make sure the vehicles aren't touching, hook the cables up to the non-running car first then connect them to the running vehicle. Black then red. Done.
8. PAUL P Says: Hi
The transfer is to slow to bake a difference. I don`t start the car giving the boost. I`ve popped too many alternators.
9. richard Says: yes the dead battery will draw the juice out of the good one with both cars off
