Drum brake push harder than disk?

(2011-05-19 14:20:06)
1. Clueless Says: So, yesterday i was checking out a 1966 Corvair with drum brake. and when i test drove it and tried the brake, it takes much more force from my foot than just my modern car! i was wondering if that was normal for the car of that year and also not being disk brake!

So my question is, does the force you put on the brake pedal differ from disk to drum? Or even classic to modern? Thanks a lot.
2. mark h Says: Being a 1966 i would say this car did not have a power vacuum booster/power brakes so you must push down a lot harder to stop than one with power brakes.
3. Dr. Knowitall Says: The reason it was harder to push the pedal is it did not have power brakes. If drum brakes are adjusted right and the power booster is the same, pedal feel should be about the same. Drum brakes have more surface area for friction material but build up heat much faster causing brake fade. Disk brakes dissipate heat much better making them the better of the two.
4. bobweb Says: My guess is that it's the vacuum power brake assist that's the problem, not whether it has pads or shoes. So check the power brake booster "flying saucer" mounted below the hood on the driver's side. The main engine vacuum goes to a one way valve that plugs into the booster. Maybe it's bad or the booster diaphram is old and rotted if never replaced.
5. chevyraceman_383 Says: Umm I think the diff you feel is maunal brakes VS. power brakes.

Disk and drum should need the same foot force applied to them..

Manual brakes on other hand has no help from vac, hyd. pressure or elec.. Its all you, all leg power.

Power brakes has a brake booster to 'ramp up' the force/pressure on system so you don't have to press pedal as hard
6. mdk68gto, ase certified m tech Says: the force that you apply to the brake pedal is multiplied and applied to all 4 brake assemblies. drum brakes dont stop as well but you should not feel a difference. i am thinking that if the car sat for a while , you might have surface rust on the drums.
7. darren Says: yes drums take more force then disk disk beats drums in almost everything there lighter easier to stop i think there easier to install the only advantage you would have with drums is you cant worp drums and you cant brake them from tightening the lugs to tight
8. PAUL P Says: Hi
The pressure is the same but the drum breaks have more square inches of contact then disk breaks.
That was the old way.
