1. Clueless Says: Hi. I have manual brake and manual steering '65 chevy. i'll be changing out the wheel cylinder that is given out with new one and i've heard that in the fluid when you change it, air gets in it and makes it lose its balance with other brakes. How do you balance it if there's such things that happen? Do you bleed the fluid and refill it all up once it's all flushed out? If so, do all cylinders need to be taken out? Thanks a lot in advance. Cheers.

i have '65 corvair btw, it's pretty sweet, please don't bombard me with the "unsafe" crap lol : P
2. roger Says: on the back side of a wheel cylinder is a nipple with a lock nur. putting a clear plastic hose on the nipple filling the master cylinder with fluid and one guy keeps the waster cyl full and pumps the brake pedal, while the guy in back moniters the fluid coming out the nipple, you can see the air bubbles in the plastic get smaller until their is no more. you do one wheel at a time. Some guys dont use the plastic tube, they just watch the stream shoot out out and can tell when there is no more air, but this is also messy way to do it. (when the fluid shoots out under pressure it spits when air bubbles go through the nipple. So some guy who has done lots of brake jobs knows when the air is gone, If is a good idea to do both wheel cylinders, this is how to make the brakes work evenly. And buy whats called a spring kit you should replace all the springs. Its best to do one side at a time. The benefit of this is when putting new springs on, you can go look at the other side to make sure its right. and brake shoes have a front and a rear, its important not to put them on backwards.
Some vehicles come with different size rear brake shoes, Take one set, or measure the width and length. Over size brake shoes are usually for heavy duty service vehicles like cop cars or taxi s The funny looking wheel thing is a self adjuster, make sure this is hooked up correctly. When pumping the air out of the system do not let the fluid level get too low of it sucks air, and you start all over.
some cars have an angled master cylinder, you have to get it level by jacking up the back, and thats how you add fluid.
3. STONE Says: Google brake bleeding procedures and research it, it is not hard and is pretty universal from car to car on the process. I prefer the drip method then doing a manual bleed with an assistant or brake bleeding kit . As far as brake balance with a 4 wheel drum car it is all about getting them all adjusted the same mechanically with matched components ie drums and pads. Be warned though even a properly adjusted system that stops straight during normal braking can still pull one way or another during a panic stop, its just the nature of 4 wheel drums.
