1. LJ Says: In order to save gas is it best to turn the car off and then turn it back on once i see a green light or is it best to just leave the car running.

I was told that is the car is running without moving after a certian amount of seconds that it will waste lots of gas.
2. Paul Says: sitting at a light for a minute or so does NOT waste lots of gas.

Constantly turning it off and on will put more wear on the ignition switch, battery, alternator, and starter, so you will end up spending MORE money in the long run on replacing these parts sooner.

Think of it THIS way: which is easier (and cheaper) to replace, a few cents worth of gas, or a starter.

according to the experts, it takes somewhere between 5-10 miles to replace the charge used to start the car, so if you keep turning it off and on without a long drive to fully recharge it, the battery will eventually go dead.
3. Joe Says: In the old days with carburetor it was better off to leave your car idling as it took more gas to start your engine. Now a days and the older hybrids (before electric) the car would shut it self off when ever you came to a complete stop and restart itself when you went to accelerate. The question is is it worth your time to always have to restart your engine. remember you are putting wear and tear on your starter and battery when doing so. If you really want to save gas use gravity in your favor. I coast down all hills. I have a 6 Cly all wheel drive and by coasting down hills I pick up between 2-3 miles per gallon depending on how many hills I can cost down. Also I have found using shell gas I defiantly get better mileage. I am not sure if the nitrogen they put in there gas mixture really makes a different or not. But I am willing to pay 2-4 cents more a gallon for the better fuel economy it gives me.
Hope this helps
4. Phillip S Says: Best to let your car idle slowly at a red stop light until the light turns green, up to one minute of waiting. If there is a long train or closed railway gates, it will usually be desirable to turn the engine off while you wait.
