Patrick Z Says: if you have a locking torque convertor, you could be losing electrical power to the locking solenoid, letting the convertor run unlocked and allowing high rpm. sounds like you're also losing power to the temperature sending unit, and gear indicator as well. Trace the circuit and see what component all three share, if all that power is coming out of a central transmission control unit, then that unit could have a power supply/grounding issue. Rule that out first.
