What size transmission do I have on my 1966?

(2011-06-12 14:20:15)
1. that guy Says: I have a 1966 Dodge A-100 short van. it is equiped with the 225 slant six and has a 3 speed transmission with the shifter on the side colum. or AKA the "three on the tree" shifter. I am trying to figure out the size of this tran so I can find parts for it, I am missing the speedo gear and speedo plug and have also had no luck in finding them. Also what size is the transmission oem for the 170 slant six an will these part work as well? Is there any transmissions out there that are new that will work with a 225 slant six? I live in California Los Angeles County
2. Buster Says: if its a non syncro 1st gear its an A903 if its a full syncro its an A745. indication of a non syncro would be grinding while putting it into 1st while not at a complete stop. and for J's info the A727 wasent available until 1971 and is an automatic
3. bo Says: the 727 was out earlier than 71
4. J Says: During that time frame, Chrysler had 2 different 3 speed transmissions.

The A904 was typically used with 6 cylinder engines in a light duty application. they were installed later into some 4 cylinder applications and Simca vehicles built by Chrysler in Europe

The A727 was usually used in 8 cylinder applications and heavy duty

However they did mix them up some.

btw "three on the tree" does not relate to automatic transmissions. it was slang for a 3 speed manual transmission column shift

EDIT:

here are 2 recyclers that say they have the transmission complete, none state whether it is manual or automatic...confirm that it is the correct unit before purchase.....you might buy the complete trans and take what you need, keep or sell what's left

speedo cable if you still have the housing (outer shell) you should still be able to get a universal cable (cut to fit) for it...just follow the directions carefully
