Oil calculator idea. What do you think?

1. thegeeza Says: Hey Guys!

I'm a web designer and I'm looking for a new project. The one i've come up with is pretty random, but I think it will work great.

The idea is to help owners of a new cars (new to them, so it can be a previously owned one). When you buy a car sometimes it hard to know what oil the car is suppose to take and if you make a mistake the consequences can be huge. So I was going to build a website when you can search for your car and it will tell you the oil that's best suited to it, obviously it's a long job but I was going to add in features that allow users to submit car and oil recommendations, these will all be moderated of course.

Would this be a good idea?

I have ideas on how to expand it when the basic system is working ok. I want to make the site a simple as possible so it doesn't get to complex and bulky.
2. Stpaulguy Says: I guess it may be of some use. However, the new GS-5 oils that are now coming out are all backwards compatible so they're really the new standard. So your site will only list the recommended viscosities. I can see some people using a single site for that, rather than searching the web for that information. In addition to listing just oil, you might also want to list all the other recommended fluids for each vehicle. It's a myth that there's "universal" coolant, so you could use the proper coolant for each vehicle. Same thing with power steering fluid. Some use trans fluid, while others use clear power steering fluid. Most vehicles use either DOT 3 or 4 brake fluid, so not much to do there. But there's a lot of difference in transmission and differential fluids and additives. Call the new site "Lube Central."

I'm liking it more and more.

I'd link my repair site (shown below) to a site like that

3. Dan B Says: Probably a good idea, but it will be labor intensive to keep the database updated and current.

I've never had a problem with mixing oil brands or weights. Even mixing synthetics with petroleum based oils isn't a problem - they do make a blend of synthetic/petroleum oils.

But transmission fluid is another issue. You MUST use the proper fluid for the transmission or you will ruin the transmission.
4. JonClarky Says: Castrol already offer this service on their website.
5. brad b Says: good idea there a re a few sites out there but there not really catered to free users as far as oil and oil recomendations it will be a big undertaking to figure out every single make and model of vehicles
6. jade_alpha Says: I'm sure someone would make use of it but the information is already out there on the web.
