Whats mods are the best to start out with on a 98' Mustang GT?
(2011-06-14 14:15:16) 1. Says: I am looking at buying a 1998 Mustang GT 5-speed manual, what are some good mods to start me on my way to making this a quick street car? I'm competing against my friend who is building a 1975 T/A2. Says: Generally, the first mods to make on any modern Mustang would be:1- High flow air filter or CAI(cold air intake) Note: a CAI is not any better than a K&N for the stock air box. 95% of CAI's pull in hot air from the engine compartment with their open element filters even with a "heat shield". This makes the air charge actually hotter then the stock air box so "cold air" is a bit of a misnomer. A lot of those CAI's also have metal tubing instead of plastic which further conducts heat into the air. Hot air is bad for performance.
2- Aftermarket cat back exhaust(if adding on headers make sure it's compatible with them and whatever X or H pipe you get)
3- Computer tune(SCT is recommended as most dyno shops use this brand)
4- Headers(long tube is recommended over short tubes but even a short tube is better than stock)
5- X or H pipe with high flow cats
6- Lower axle gears(don't get too crazy with the ratio as mpg and top speeds will suffer. Also, the engine will be running at a higher RPM with lower gears at any speed. You'd need a new speedo gear to read correctly as well. 3.73's are as low as I'd ever go for street use and I'd probably do 3.55's since when you add more power to the car the rear gears become less important. If they're too low when you add more power you'll lose traction and the car won't hook up. Higher HP cars will actually have higher stock ratios to best make use of the power.)
7- Intake parts: Aftermarket Intake plenums, slightly bigger fuel injectors, MAF(mass airflow sensor), TB(throttle body)
8- Power adder: supercharger, turbocharger, or nitrous
You could just get the power adder first and get the most bang for your buck but it's expensive and you'd need bigger fuel injectors, high capacity fuel pump, and a computer tune to run it.3. Says: 1. There are hundreds of websites that talk about modifying Mustangs. They're one of the most popular cars on the planet, so there's no excuse as to why you haven't found a site and already gotten your answer...except pure laziness.
2. You have already lost against the T/A on account of pure class. You simply can't compare the two. It doesn't even matter if you win every race against the car. It has more style, more character, more everything.4. Says: I have a 96 gt take my advice due to the computer any advances you undergo will be miniscule BUY a sct tuner at SCT.com they will set it up for your car and any advances you make they will send you a downloadable cd ok with that out of the way here are some parts worth looking at without internal work intake bigger mafs bigger plenum with a matching intake plenum bbk headers and under drive pulley kit most can be bought through bbk.com thats just a few. But remember without that tuner they will never grow to its potental.... Good luck brother Tag: Whats mods are the best to start out with on a 98' Mustang GT?
