Does the word "cam" in cam shaft stand for anything? is it an acronym?

Jaci Says: was explaining DOHC to a friend of mine yesterday when she asked "does the word 'cam' stand for something?" & i said it was basically the name of the bump, but couldn't think of the root of the word, or if it was an acronym...idk i never thought about that
