What happens when you run the wrong engine oil for high millage ?

1. Marlo Says: My Oldsmobile Silhouette has over 350 K miles on it.
The engine is a V6 3400 or 3.4L and it calls for 5W-30 and I run high millage Pennzoil.
Right now I stick with the Fram High Millage oil filter and they're pretty heavy duty.

Question is - A while back my dad accidentally put 10W-30 in along with a Fram Tough Guard filter.
What could go wrong when running 10W-30 into a car the requests 5w-30 high mileage? I'm getting oil changed tomorrow
2. mdk68gto, ase certified m tech Says: not a great deal will happen in that situation. you might see a small variance in the fuel economy but that is about it.
3. Clicker777 Says: Your engine could easily seize up. It would then be badly damaged, and may have to be replaced.
The idea of using (a) multi grade oil(s) is to try to avoid an oil change when sumer or winter comes in.
Otherwise, a lighter grade oil is specified for winter, and a heavier one for sumer.
The manufacturers know what they are doing in specifying the oil requirements in any engine.
Stick with them.
If your engine has had a long life in miles or hours used, it might soon need a complete refurbishment.
Or a replacement engine. Even a re-boar will not be enough. If the odermeter (distance traveled meter) clock has been round once, or more it is time to think again.
There is, however, records of engines exceeding up to three times this distance, it all depends on how the car is driven. Foot flat on the floor, not so good, and please change down the gears when going up hill, but this must apply from new. Properly serviced, good ,not so serviced....
4. roger Says: nothing would go wrong leave it there the oil is slightly thicker when cold, 10 w 30 means that the oil is only 10 which is thin for start up. as it warms up chemicals in the oil will keep it at 30 w while at operating temprature. So the 10w has better protection than 5 w, and with 350 thousand miles ANY THING CAN HAPPEN AT ANYTIME IT WOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH OIL AND A LOT TO DO WITH HIGH MILES, i WOULD EXPECT THE MOTOR TO BLOW UP ANY TIME AT THIS POINT THERE HAS TO BE BEARING AND CRANK WEAR BY NOW. i RUN 20 50 IN ALL MY CHEVY OVER 100,000 MILES.
5. Danna Vu Says: It should be useful. http://giftchoice.info/250166/oil-filter
