69 mustang fastback hood scoop questions?

(2011-07-11 14:20:19)
1. DOCTA Z Says: i know a little bit about hood scoops and what they do but i have a few questions

Are they just a hole in the hood that cools the engine? If not where do they connect?

If water or snow gets in the hood scoop what sort of damage could this cause?

Should i get a working one or a cosmetic one?
2. Chevelle Says: Ok some of what my fellows have said are correct but a few are incorrect. A hood scoop aka Ram Air induction (their is also cowl induction) draws in cool air from outside and pulls it into the engine. You want as cold of air as possible because cold air is more dense and the denser the air the more air you can get into your engine which means more power, simple. Now the closer you have the Ram Air to the front of the engine or the larger the hood scoop the more effective it is (if its to small or far back the air hits the hood at high speed and moves right over the Ram Air). A factory Ram Air has (generally) a hood scoop, the cold air goes into the opening, now to make it effective you need to have a rubber seal that goes around the air cleaner of the engine (carburetor) which seals to the hood of the car when you shut it. That way the cold air goes straight into the engine and the engine doesnt draw in hot air from the hood. If you build it to factory specs and have the filter, seal rain and snow will damage your engine no more then it does a normal 69 Mustang. If you need any more info just ask.
3. Knuckles Says: The hood scoop ideally is connected the air cleaner assembly allowing the engine to draw cooler air from outside the engine bay on a street car. But, you have to make provisions to keep rain out as well. If rain gets into the engine, you'll bend a connecting rod with water filling a cylinder (you cannot compress a liquid)

To achieve the "ram effect" you'd have to be travelin approximately 150 MPH to gain 1% horsepower so that is kinda limited to dragsters and track only machines.
4. Palladini Says: Get either, but the purpose of a hood scoop was to have Ram air, as you traveled, that scoop directed fast moving, high forced air directly into the breather, supposedly increasing power.
