New car versus used car?

(2011-07-16 14:30:07)
1. mias Says: I was told that it is not a good idea to buy a new car because:

1. you are possibly buying new problems.
2. the value depreciates a couple of thousand dollars when you drive it off the lot.

but I also find that when you buy a used car you possibly buy someone else's problems.
Which is the best option, used or new?
2. GM Customer Svc Says: mias,

In my opinion, buying new would be the best. You would be the first owner so you know what has been done to the car and you know your driving habits. A new car will also come with a warranty. Yes, it would depreciate when you drive it off the lot; however, most people keep their vehicles for 5-6 years. Even if you purchase maybe a 1 year old vehicle used, there still could be various issues that the previous owner had that did not tell the dealership about so they could trade it in. I encourage you to weigh all of the pros and cons before you decide.

Thank you,

3. TitoBob Says: Economically, the best bet is to buy a reliable used car from that car's dealer, with at least one year left on the original manufacturer's warranty. That way, it is most likely to be a local car that has been serviced by that dealer, and you can see the service record to make sure everything has been kept up-to-date. Your reason #1 doesn't really make sense, but #2 does, and the depreciation is highest in the first three years. Go to your local library and have a look at the April 2011 issue of Consumer Reports to get accurate information on brand & model reliability and pricing of used cars. The most reliable brands are Toyota and Honda, but not all their models are equally reliable.
4. tanGo_V Says: you said it, value decreses alot as soon as the new owner drives off with it. Just find a 1 year old car, much cheaper, great mileage and no virtually no problems you might still have it under warranty!
5. Stupid Flanders Says: Reason #1 makes zero sense.

Buying a used car can be a much bigger risk, but can also be a much better value.
Depends on the car and your negotiating skills.
