Oil viscosity, did I do any engine damage?

1. Wouldn't you know it Says: I have 97 Nissan Altima I bought a year ago, when I got it I put 10w-30 in it without giving any thought to it and have change the oil with 10w 30 every 3 months since. I just recently found out my cars manual says to put 5w-30 in it, and the manual puts extra emphasis on ONLY. Does putting 10w-30 in it effect anything, a friend of mine said hot or cold weather should dictate what oil to use? Have I shortened the life of the engine or should I be fine?
2. MasTec 1970 Says: You could have taken some miles off it's life expectancy depending on where you live! 10W30 oil is only good down to 0 degrees below 0 degrees it is VERY resistant to flow at these temperatures and you may have starved it a few times for a few seconds.
3. ChrisM Says: I'd be certain that you didn't cause any damage to your car. The difference between these viscosities is minimal. Switch back to the 5w30 and don't worry about it. The only possible impact would be during immediate engine start up and even then 10w is pretty thin so it's unlikely you'd notice a difference unless you left your car parked in Alaska overnight.
4. Pete M Says: It's very unlikely that you've caused any damage by using a little heavier multi-viscosity oil.

Now that you know, use the right stuff in the future.

Also, refer to your owner's manual for maintenance intervals and correct fluids to use in your car.
5. Stpaulguy Says: 5w-30 flows faster at startup--especially in winter. Your friend's advice is outdated. In the old days you would use 5W oil for winter and 10W in summer. Now, to get best engine life and better gas mileage almost all manufacturers want you to use 5W-30 year round.
6. Wilt the Stilt Says: no you haven't hurt it per say and the reason they recommend 5-30 is because of the higher r.p.m.the 4 cylinders drive at. The thinner oil moves through the systems easier and faster than10-30.
7. tootall Says: It's fine next time just put 5w 30 in you didnt hurt a thing.
