What HID headlight kits are legal in California?

1. Cameron Elford Says: I need to know which kits are legal for regular street use. 5k, 8k, 10k, 15k???
2. Sean Says: OEM kits are legal for street use. All the aftermarket "kits" are not legal in any state because they exceed the allowable levels of glare. The reason has nothing to do with the kits themselves, but the fact that your OEM headlight housings aren't made for HID lighting. HID lighting requires a very focused beam, which means you need a projector. The other part is, because of how bright the lights are, you need to have a very sharp cutoff at the upper half of the light to avoid blinding oncoming drivers. OEM headlights, even Halogen projectors, do not meet the legal standards for these two reasons. So the only way to get a truly legal HID lights on a car that wasn't sold with them, is to do a retrofit. This involves cutting up your stock (or better, a new stock replacement so the lenses are clear and not cloudy and yellowed) headlight housings to fit an HID projector into it that is sourced as a replacement for another vehicle. Check out the websites in my sources for more information on the legality issue and how to do a proper retrofit, as well as getting the right parts.
3. Fred C Says: The higher the temperature, the less usable light. 10k and 15k are accidents waiting to happen on the highway, you can't see worth a darn. Think about it, the higher the temperature, the closer you get to black light!
Lights over a certain temperature are not legal on North American roads because they are not safe. There is a minimum amount of usable light necessary that the higher temperatures just do not put out. 5,000 k bulbs are the safest. 10k and 12k are getting purplish, easy to spot, will likely get you tickets, plus, you won't be able to see well enough on the highway to easily avoid animals, people on bikes, or pedestrians.
5,000 k approx 3,200 lumens
6,000 k approx 2,800 lumens
8,000 k approx 2,550 lumens
10,000 k approx 2,200 lumens
12,000 k approx 2,100 lumens
There are federal lighting standards, and 99% of the kits sold on ebay, even though they tell you they are DOT approve, are definitely not approved.
4. Ultrahid Ultrahid Says: hello cameron we do sell a lot of kits to california and the most popular colors are 6k and 8k.
