rickey b Says: I have had an alternator in my 97 Lexus es 300 for less than a year and a Firestone mechanic is telling me that its not working. This is only my second alternator and my first one lasted like 200000 miles but if this one is broken then that means it only lasted less than 10,000. Is this Guy trying to rip me off?

Chris Says: I agree with Bobweb. You should be able to do a parts warranty on that alternator and get a new one. Although, being at a Firestone shop, you may only get the cost of the part replaced covered, but not the labor covered. Maybe it just failed prematurely. Stuff breaks. It happens. Although many parts will last a long time, you do get the occasional stinker that decides it's too lazy to do its job. And yeah, battery condition does make a big difference, so make sure you're square as far as that goes, too. Doesn't necessarily mean they're out to rip you off. Stuff happens.

bobweb Says: Go back to the shop that installed and warrantied your alternator. Install a new battery if yours is over 4 or 5 years old so that the alternator can be thoroughly tested properly at the shop. The shop has a warranty on the part from the auto parts supply they purchased it from.

AudieD Says: I would get an alternator from Toyota/Lexus dealer. This guy is probably installing remanufactured parts that are cheap. I was a Firestone Mechanic for a while and they will rip you off. Good luck.

Pa Says: is your battery dying? change the battery and drive for another couple months and if your battery ends up dead. then yeah it's your alternator

Davey Says: Was the second one a new alternator from the Lexus dealer? I bet not! It was a rebuilt using Chinese parts. You get what you pay for.

Wilbur Says: alternators are mechanical and electrical they will fail
