Did I do something wrong when I installed my new battery?
(2011-08-08 14:20:05) 1. Says: Okay, just installed a new battery. I did the remove black then red, replace red then black method. I couldn't clean anything because I don't have any wire brushes around or even paper towels but I did make sure everything is super tight.2003 Honda Accord. I went and bought both batteries for a v6 and 4cylinder and used the skinny one because that's what I had in the car. I still don't know if I have a v6 or 4c. I turn the key and the lights and radio will come on but the engine won't turn over. If I keep turning the key the engine will try to turn over maybe once. I replaced the battery because it has some kind of voltage parasite. Works when I jump it and everything.
I don't know what to do. Already used one neighbor to go get the batteries. Can't afford to do anything else until I return one of them. None of my neighbors ever do anything on their cars. I don't know much but I know more than they do. I am freaking out. I have college finals tomorrow. I NEED my car to friggin start.2. Says: They don't sell them charged from the store? What is this guy smoking... New batteries charge themselves and always have a full charge when you buy them! Is this an automatic or 5 speed transmission? I believe your problem could be in what is called a starter-cut relay! Do you hear a faint click under the dash when you turn the ignition key to crank the engine over? ADDED: Okay that is a problem, you should hear the starter-cut relay click EVERY time you turn the switch to crank position! EDIT: Listen again, The click should be coming from under the DASH right about where your left knee would be! The Starter Cut Relay is in the under-dash fuse/relay box under the left side of the dash. The relay is right above the fuse labeled ABS fuse 11 and to the left of the taillight relay. @ Steve, evidently other people don't think so! Lol3. Says: very true mastec, batterys come fully charged from stores when new...duh, make sure you looked up the right size battery for your car at the store, sounds like u dont have enough juice to start it...make sure its the right battery, if the car wasnt too bad before, then its probably a simple problem now4. Says: The new battery isnt fully charged, you need to drive round for a bit to charge it up and not use anything electric, radio, heaters, lights, only in the day :)5. Says: if ur battery terminals are dirty and not clamped tite , it will do what ur discribing.when u buy a battery go by the cranking amps. short answer, put the 6 cylender in it. it wont hurt nothing6. Says: invest in a battery cleaning brush and clean the cable ends the post on the new battery should already be clean. Dirty battery terminals well cause the car not to start. Good place to start7. Says: Voltage parasite? For a brainy chic ya don’t know jack about cars. You need to start with the basics. You don’t even know if you have a good battery. They don’t sell them charged from the store. That’s the first step, get one of the new batteries charged. Then put the thing in the car making sure to hook up the terminals properly and try and start the car.
Just because the lights and all important radio work does not mean the battery is charged enough to turn a starter.8. Says: the battery size needs to have enough amps crank the car.. smaller batterys are for lawn mowers or cycles.. im not sure what size your putting in it but it may be too small which could be ur problem to begin with on the other battery. and also make sure the posts are cleannnn they have to get really good conneection and be tight. and if that dont work then check the ground wire.. not the ground on the battery but the ground that runs to the metal some were... the other end of ur ground wire might be loose or dirty. that will cause it to do same symptoms. depending on were u bought ur battery i disagree with these guys on here saying they dont come precharged cause i have never bought a battery that wasnt precharged enough to start a vehicle unless u buy the kind u add the water and acid to urself to begin with!. so i disagree with them. if its a new battery it must be the connections some were. u need to check them on the battery and the ground wire both ends of it.. the end on battery of ground wire and the end were it bolts to metal some were. find it. and if that doesnt work the least thing id check is the starter wires make sure they are tight and not coroded green dirty looking. everything must be clean and tight. make sure u use the proper battery for ur car.... u might just try the bigger battery first.
