Selling my car, but I can't find my title and the DMV says I can't get a replacement?

Brad C Says: I'm planning to sell my car to Carmax. It isn't finished being payed off and has a lien against it, which I believe is the loan. The DMV is closed today, but their website says that I can't get a replacement title if there is a lien against it. Does this mean that the dealership (the lender) has the original title and maybe I just had a copy? If so, do I need the title when I got to Carmax, or will they get a hold of the dealership and work with them? Sorry if this is confusing!

Scott H Says: You wouldn't have the title, the lender has it. You can get the title from the lender when the loan is paid in full. If the deal you make with Carmax includes paying off your loan, they will handle it.
