Why do people put fart mufflers on cars?

Third, you have to understand the styling behind it. In Japan, the stock muffler on the car is RIGHT behind the rear bumper cover, so to get a performance muffler on it, you have to hang it below the bumper. Why they use 4" diameter tips is beyond me, other than it eliminates a huge flat area of the muffler, but that's the style of aftermarket Japanese mufflers.
Fourth, stick a flowmaster on a 1.6L Civic and it will sound the same as with the A'Pexi N1 muffler hanging off the rear. The sound is from the configuration of the engine, not from the muffler. Likewise, you can put two of those A'Pexi mufflers on a V8 mustang or camaro and they would sound the same as a pair of flowmasters on those.
Ultimately, if you shop for an exhaust system for an import car to increase performance, that's the style of muffler the market offers you. Unless you want to shell out the money to have a custom exhaust made to NOT look like that, that's what you are stuck with.3.
