Are there any "lemon laws" that apply to private sellers?

1. Cal Gardunio Says: Bought a 2000 Chevy Cavalier
Car ran great long enough for me to buy it and drive it home, then it acted up.
Took it to two places (Gateway Chevrolet & a smaller auto shop) and both said the vehicle had been in a front end accident that was bad enough to set off all airbags. I was not told about the crash (no salvaged title, title is clean-Chevy place checked the VIN) nor was I told that the airbags had been deployed. Is there and law or legal rights against this? I bought it yesterday, got it checked out today. Any help or websites or people I can call to get more info? Any help is appreciated.
2. Stupid Flanders Says: If you have been doing research 'all damn day', and are confident you are protected, then you wouldn't be asking this question.

If you can't prove the seller misrepresented the vehicle, you have no case. The only way it would be illegal is if you asked about whether this vehicle had these problems, in writing, and the person selling it flat out lied, in writing. Even if you discussed it, verbally, it is not admissable in court because it is heresay.

Next time have the car inspected before you buy it. It would have saved you in this situation.
Any seller that refuses a pre-sale inspection should be avoided. Obviously, they have something to hide.

If lemon laws applied to 12 year old vehicles and sellers were responsible for them after the sale, you would never be able to afford to purchase a used car.
3. xx_satanic_mechanic_xx Says: Nope

You did this a$$ backward. You have a car inspected BEFORE you buy.

Once you buy, you accept the car you are shown, in the condition it is presented. Your own fault for not protecting your hard-earned money

ADD: Yes there are *some* laws for protectionj on used cars, in *some* states. But none of them extend to a 12-yr old car, with (undoubtedly) over 100k miles.
4. David G Says: " I bought it yesterday, got it checked out today." Private sales are as-is. Whenever you buy ANYTHING used you check it out before you buy, not after. You had the right to have the vehicle inspected before purchasing and chose not to.
5. Scott H Says: There's no lemon law protection on a 12-year old used car. Lemon laws don't apply to private sellers as private car sales are "as is". So you bought a car with deployed airbags, and now it's yours.
6. n Says: Should have gotten the car inspected before you bought it. You most likely bought the car in an as-is condition.

You cant do anything else unless you fix it and keep it or sell this dump to another person
7. whata waste Says: no, you bought a used car as is. It was your responsibility to have it checked out before buying. Lemon laws are only for brand new cars (original owner)
