Why cant i over rev my car?
(2010-05-29 00:01:04) 1. Says: i have a 2005 dodge neon sxt and i cant over rev past 4 rpms its like it has a block on it why?2. Says: Most cars made after about 2000 are built with a rev-limiter in the ECU that stops you from exceeding a certain RPM while the car is in neutral. This is because if you are at redline (which is probably between 6000 and 6500 RPM on your neon) and slam the transmission into drive or 1st or any gear, you will break it, if not right then, much sooner afterwards than if you hadn't done it. In the hot-rodding world, this is known as a "Neutral drop" and it was a way to get a low powered automatic car to do a burnout, but it burned out the transmission as much as the tires. As others said, in drive it should go all the way to the normal rev limiter of 6000-6500. If it is a manual, the same theory could be applied, but replacing neutral with the clutch pushed in. Also, not just dealerships can remove it, anyone who has tuning software for the neon's ECU can remove it.3. Says: To keep you from doing something stupid... like blowing up the engine.4. Says: There is a governor built into the car's computer and the only one who can remove it is the dealership, i doubt they will.5. Says: It has a "rev limiter" which prevents it from revving higher.6. Says: I assume you meant *4000* rpm, not 4 rpm?If you can't go past 4000 rpm then it is not the limiter, the limiter will be around 6500-7000 rpm. Failed muffler or clogged catalytic converter come to mind first.7. Says: if if won't rev past 4000rpm IN DRIVE then there is a problem, usually clogged exhuast. If it is IN PARK and won't rev past 4000rpm, the their is another rev limiter that applys while the car is in park8. Says: you cant if its setting still it has a rev limiter on it to prevent damage to the engine,if your driving it ,it should go past 4 k on it,but not setting still,it wont to far past 4 k though good luck.
