1991 240SX Smoke from exhaust?

1. B 4 Says: I have a 1991 240 SX SE with 245K miles on it.. It looks and runs great! I get comments often about how great the interior and body looks given it's age...

But I'm noticing that I need to add about 1/2 quart of oil to it about once a month..There is no indication of leaks under the car. I also notice a light ploom of smoke coming from the exhaust ONLY after ideling at a light for more than 20 seconds.. The longer I idle, the larger the ploom of smoke... The smoke has a mild bluish tint to it, but is mostly white..

I never smell any oil burning under the hood or inside the car... What's up?
2. bobweb Says: Unless your engine burns more than one quart of oil every 1,000 miles, new car manufacturers state that your engine is orperating normally. A bluish smoke on cold start up in the morning or on heavy acceleration (in your rear view mirror), indicates leaking valve seals which is quite common and acceptable on many older vehicles, especially if your getting more than 1,000 miles per quart of oil.
3. rick29148 Says: She's burning a bit of oil. Not at all unusual for any car with that many miles on it. You could go up to a slightly thicker oil - That might slow the amount it burns, but it will also slightly increase the wear inside the engine.
4. bandit_60 Says: that,s not bad, a pint a month. probably you have valve seals leaking some but oil is cheaper then another car. that blue tint you see is from the valve seals leaking.
5. Brandon Says: yeah buddy. shes burnin oil. id suggest a rebuild. or at least new piston rings.
6. taxpayer Says: what you need in a tempo xr350
