Volkswagen GTI and 01-04 Civic SI hatch. Which is more dependable?

1. Jake Says: These are two similar vehicles but is V.W. reliable and durable? How about gas mileage for the two?

2. Ken Says: the Civic Si hands down. Combined (city+highway) mileage on my Si is 27-28mpg.

the GTi cannot compare in mileage, the turbo will suck gas especially because it spools at such a low rpm.

Reliability and durability is also hands down to the Civic Si, it's a Honda so its easy to work on and their models enjoy no required maintenance other than oil changes until 100,000 miles.

The tradeoff is the GTi is quite a bit faster.

3. Mr. Smartypants Says: Both Japanese and German cars are very well built, but statistics on 'frequency of repair' favor the Japanese. So the Civic is a better choice for dependability/reliability. And probably longevity also.
