Why do English people drive cars on their right side?
(2011-08-21 14:25:04) 1. Says: I live in Argentina and I know in Argentina people drive cars on their left side. But I've heard English people drive cars on their right side and I'd rather know why English people drive cars on their right side(In England, people don't drive cars on their left side as in Argentina).2. Says: The Brits drive on the left side of the road. It's actually the rest of the world that departed form that standard, not the other way around.People rode horses on the left so their right hand (dominant) would be toward each other. Driving on that same side followed naturally.
Other countries did the opposite for many reasons, including just wanting to be anti-british, but some practical reasons as well.
~3. Says: To piss off car manufacturers. ;p
But seriously from what i know in the late 1700s everyone used wagons and the person steering the horses sat on the left side, because he used his right arm to hold the reins, I guess they just didn't feel like changing everything when cars were invented.4. Says: I don't know why we do that, but it is better if you are right-handed because you just steer with your right hand at a 12o'clock position on the wheel and use your left hand for changing gear, using the phone, eating, scratching, etc.5. Says: Up to the late 1700's, everybody travelled on the left side of the road because it's the sensible option for feudal, violent societies of mostly right-handed people.6. Says: i dont know, we just do, which side of the road do you drive on? we drive on the left, so driving in the right of our car could just be so were able to see the other side of the road7. Says: It's more to do with swordfighting. Most people are right handed, and would hold their sword in that hand, so it would follow naturally, to keep people on that side whilst travelling on horseback! The same as jousting really.8. Says: Because they also drive on the opposite side of the road therefore needing a right-hand drive to put them on the white-line side of the car/road.9. Says: It isnt just the English that drive on that side, Japan and many African countries do it too.10. Says: We do drive our cars on the left hand side (of the road) drivers sit on the right hand side because it makes it easier to see what's coming towards you.11. Says: we drive on our left side and the steering is on the right
we don't drive cars on the right side because that would be opposite direction12. Says: Why do people in the UK drive on their left side? Tradition and law in both cases.13. Says: Because any other way just wouldn't be right.14. Says: because it's fun to be different XP Tag: Why do English people drive cars on their right side?
