Why is my 74 Duster dying when I let off the gas?

1. Ninerkins Says: I have a 1974 Duster that I just bought a couple months ago. We've replaced a couple things in it already. The battery, alternator and voltage regulator because I was having a battery issue that we figured out. It was running fine until a couple days ago. My car died at a red light. When I tried starting it back up, it died when I let off the gas. Thank god it was late at night and there was no one out or I wouldn't have made it home. How I had to get it home was not let go of the gas. I had to start the car in neutral and drop it in drive and just not stop the whole way home.
WHAT'S WRONG WITH MY BABY?!?! T______T
2. Bubbavet Says: I would start off with the bare basics. Are all the plug wires connected? Do you have any vacuum hoses that may have come loose? Have you pulled the spark plugs to check if they are fouled? Have you checked the points setting? Have you checked the fuel filter and fuel pump? If the engine will run and is able to pull the vehicle I really doubt that it has jumped time. Normally, when an engine jumps time it will not run at all or backfires big time out of the carb. I really rather imagine it is the plug wires or a vacuum hose. Just take your time and carefully check anything that has to do with air, fuel and electrical. I had a Plymouth Duster and it would do pretty much the same thing at times and it turned out to be the fuel pump was getting weak and not providing enough fuel to the carb. Good luck. I really miss that little car.
3. Tom Says: sounds like it just needs a tune up plugs, cap, rotor points set timing and adjust the carb if necessary that should make your baby all better P.S. it would probably like a name to.
4. Michael Says: Not sure which engine you have, but those symptoms are consistent with the timing chain having jumped. A check of the ignition timing will tell that - if the ignition is about 20 degrees retarded a new timing chain is what you need. Alternatively, you can set the crank to TDC and remove the distributor cap - if the rotor is not pointing at the #1 tower the chain probably jumped.
