Is it still necessary to break-in a new car?

1. AC31 Says: I just got a 2012 Volkswagen GTI. I don't see anything in the manual about breaking in the engine. So do new cars even need this procedure anymore? I don't plan on racing or anything like that, I just enjoy quick accelerations from time to time so I wanted to know if doing so will be bad for the car at this stage.
2. TaraNath Says: First, Congratulations on your new 2012 Volkswagen GT1. There is nothing about breaking in the engine because that is not necessary. New cars don't even have to go through this technical procedure. Accelerating once in a while won't damage the engine at this stage. Happy speeding!..
3. mailbox1024 Says: No, there is not a break in period any more, most new cars today are built with very tight or exact tolerances. I would do the 1st oil change at 500 miles but still watch the rpms on the tach, then after that drive normally.
good luck.......
4. Shirley Says: no,just drive it
