1996 honda civic ex wont start! Ahhhh?

1. Kevin W Says: I just bought a 1996 honda civic ex off of craigslist. It has a clean title 180k miles, passes smog, looks great... welllllll anyway all that has nothing to do with my problem.

So anyway, I drove the car back home, no rattles, no noises, handled fine, all electrical things worked.. Woke up the next morning and went to get it smogged and got back home. Later on I decided to go for a drive and the car wouldn't start. The electrical things work inside... windows, radio, ac... ect... i even tried jump starting the battery with another car and it didnt work.... so i pushed the car and popped it in to gear and it worked!

That's when I started to think it was the starter that was bad so I removed it and took it into pepboys to have them run a test on it.

Voltage test - failed
current test - passed
solenoid test - passed
chatter test - passed
drive extension - failed

What else could be wrong with the car that wont make it start? Also when i pushed the clutch in, turned the key to start the car, it made no noises whatoever.... just dead silence...

2. Kyle G Says: It could be a bad Ignition switch, try jiggling the key while its in the ignition and mess around with that. If you get it started that way you diagnosed the problem.

Sometimes this works but not always, But the Ignition switch going out was a common problem on honda civics and accords. Its funny but I just remembered that your clutch safety switch could be bad also that would cause the same problem.

Im really Tall account two Says: wow i dont know what to tell you, did they other owner say anything about it not working or somthing. i would call him up and tell and even though you probally wont get your money back ask him what he use to do to get it to work. if all else fails bring it to a shop they will tell you exactly what you need.

4. cody Says: Im 99 percent sure that you ignition switch is bad. Go have a new switch put in the steering column and i bet it will start right up.
