Does your car need coolant for heat to work?

Michael Says: The heater core requires hot coolant to give you heat, so yes, the car needs coolant for heat to work. A coolant leak is an emergency anyway. Overheating is one of the most common causes of engine destruction and coolant loss is the surest way to overheating. As long as it is leaking you have to check it often enough that you never have to add more than a pint of coolant, and *never* add tap water - it will quickly plug the radiator with hard water deposits that no flush will touch. Fixing this really has to be a high priority.3. Ben Says: Yes, you need coolant to flow through your heater core. That is where your heat comes from. And yes, coolant is a vital part of keeping your engine running..
