Can a heat gun be used to successfully heat shrink metal?
(2011-11-05 14:20:19) 1. Says: I've heard that to heat shrink metal you need to get it hot enough that it turns red. Is there a heat gun that can do this? I'm hoping a heat gun will be safer and easier to use than a torch.2. Says: to heat shrink metal requires either a regular oxy / acetylene or a propane / acetylene torch set with a heating tip but no cutting tip, plus a heat shrink hammer...and lots of practice followed by a body filethe problem with doing this is the metal gauges in body components of today are just too thin to really do a great job without using a lot of body filler3. Says: a quality heat gun gets very hot but i have no clue what heat shrink metal is, I know about heat shrink tubing that is meant for electrical sealing. in that instance it would do fine and I have used it for that. a simple match does it as well.4. Says: No, you would need to use a torch.
What are you trying to 'heat shrink' anyways? as i am sure there are other ways you could go about doing whatever you need to get done.5. Says: lol no.
You need a temp of around 4,000* F to to 5,000* F to do that. An oxy/acetylene torch will do it, thats about the only tool that will though.6. Says: A heat gun wouldn't get metal hot enough. A torch is the best way to metal cherry red. When you heat metal it will expand slightly.7. Says: NO! and that is.............What are you trying to do and why?
