Removing a stuck/seized bolt?

(2011-11-15 15:20:12)
1. twocosmicfish Says: Trying to remove a stuck bolt, with no luck. The bolt in question is about 1/2 inch diameter, about 3 inches long, with only the last inch or so threaded. I have the nut off and there is no threading in the shaft, but the bolt won't come out. There is a metal plate welded to the head of the bolt so regardless, this bolt cannot be unscrewed - it is supposed to just slide out once the nut is removed. I have tried a few heating/cooling cycles with a torch, I've tried penetrating oil, I've been reduced to hammering on the damn thing - all with no luck. I am reluctant to cut it off because it seems that will only make removal harder. I have a replacement bolt - this thing can get destroyed, just so long as I can remove it.

Any suggestions?
2. Pepper of the Moon Says: If you have tried penetrating oil as a 'hot spanner' (welding torch), then you are left with two options - but first, did you only apply the heat to the housing and NOT to the bolt? If you heated the bolt, then you will make removal even more difficult!

Option 1: Use a pneumatic air hammer, if you have, or can borrow one.

Option 2: Drill it out. Ensure that you centre punch accurately and then pilot-drill and go up in gradual size increases. Laborious, but may be your only choice!
3. dan d Says: If the bolt is not welded on which it shouldn't be then i would try using a socket on the head of the bolt and get it to turn. Put some penetrating oil on it let it sit and get the bolt to move. Try moving it back and forth on way then the next just to try and break it free.
4. Tyler Says: well you could attempt to drill it out and tap a new hole (if the hole is threaded). or you could possibly get a punch and a real big hammer and beat on one end of it? you have a good description but i think some sort of picture for us to see may help us to help you. Is there any weight on it? whats the bolt stuck on?
5. bandit_60 Says: what,s the bolt on? i mean what part of the car the bolt is on? if it screws in then it has to screw back out. are you sure it,s not welded on? if you have room to work then try a pipe wrench and if you have to use a cheater pipe on the pipe wrench.
6. scott_1234567890 Says: If it moves just a little, then try penetrating oil and use the back and fourth movement to work the oil in. I assume that you have this vehicle appropriately jacked up and that the only weight this thing supports is it's own?

If you are trying to remove something after whatever holds it in is unscrewed (I am unsure on that) then try beating it out.

Otherwise I am also unsure if you can remove it was part of an assembly. I-E- if this is stuck to other parts, can you remove it along with some other stuff than bring it someplace to get it removed or otherwise be able to get better leverage on the bolt due to better access?
