How can you tell if your valve stem seals are bad?

1. Taliesin Says: Can this cause an external oil leak?
2. Donny Says: If your valve guide seals are leaking, you will have an oil consumption issue. You can tell this by, obviously, checking to see if you have lost any oil. You can also tell by the color of your exhaust. If it is blueish, your engine is burning oil. You could also pull our your spark plugs and inspect them.
3. Harley Drive Says: no it is all internal you can't tell if they are bad but if clouds of smoke come out the back it might be an indicator, most leaks are the cam cover gasket, they now use rubber which perishes and rots in a few years the old cork and composition gaskets lasted for much longer
4. George S Says: if it smokes when you first start it in the morning then the guides are bad, if the guides are bad so are the seals
