Removing rusted welded bolt from sheet metal?
(2011-11-28 15:20:25) 1. Says: I have a small engine shroud (fixing a snowblower) with 4 bolts sticking out that have messed up threads so I need them out. They appear to be welded because twisting and pounding does not work. I am thinking would it work to use a torch to heat the metal and the weld would break off from the expanding metal? It probably won't get hot enough to melt the weld but could this work? If so, what type (fuel) torch would be recommended?2. Says: You don't have a picture here but it sounds like the bolt heads are rusted and you can't geta socket on them. If that's the case, shear them off with a cutoff tool or a chisel, remove the
shroud , then work with the studs that are rusted into the block. Penetrating oil , vice grips,
and a propane torch should do the trick. Take your time on this repair and think out all possibilities
You want to heat the block and not the bolt.
Just a suggestion.3. Says: Oxygen and Acetylene, but be ware it will get hot enough to cut through the sheetmetal its self if your not careful, and yes it can cut the weld.4. Says: a 4" grinder might be a better way Tag: Removing rusted welded bolt from sheet metal?
