Why doesn't my starter engage?
(2011-12-25 15:15:10) 1. Says: I just bought a new battery and new starter to put in my 84 ford bronco. I got it all replaced and hook-up and it started great for a few days but then the battery started draining overnight. I went to investigate and i found the starter wire had melted to the headers(i forgot to check the wire placement after hooking up starter) i visually inspected the wire and i didn't see and bare wire but there was only so much i could see. I moved the wire and hooked it back up and it seemed the drain went away but the starter still only clicks even with a fully charged battery. i think the wire must be bad but i need a second opinion before i tear into anything. thanks!2. Says: One thing if the wire was causing the drain then it has to have a bare spot where it touched the metal and ground so replace that wire and then see how it works. Most part stores will have a universal wire that you can use. Also if the wire you're talking about is the main positive feed to the starter it's possible the starter solenoid is damaged and you should be able to replace it but if it's brand new with no visual arc marks then bring it back and get a replacement.I'd also suggest that you change the main engine block ground and don't forget to clean the cable/wire o-ring connectors bec that can cause issues.Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way I'd go over all the starter/engine block ground, alternator and batter posts with a wire brush and sandpaper, plus do all the grounds you can find, also you can buy a jell that helps to protect such connections from moister etc.
Merry Xmas3. Says: You're quite welcome Merry Xmas 4. Says: You are going to need another starter and a cable that goes from the selenoid to the starter that is the one you fried . That should fix it . Tag: Why doesn't my starter engage?
